  • noun sickly sentimentality. The word is Yiddish, from the German for cooking fat or dripping. The word was used in the New york Jewish community to describe what Leo Rosten in The Joys of Yiddish (1970) defines as ‘corn, pathos, maudlin and mawkish substance; excessive sentimentality, overly emotional mush, sugary banality’.
