- A diode with a metal-semiconductor junction, as opposed to the usual pn junction. Hot carriers are injected from the semiconductor layer into the metal layer, so that there are virtually no minority carriers injected or stored, which provides for a very low forward voltage drop and a very fast switching speed. Such diodes have multiple uses, including several in radio frequency applications, logic circuits, photodiodes, and as rectifiers. Also called Schottky barrier diode, semiconductor-metal diode, hot carrier diode, or metal-semiconductor diode.
