# section modulus

## Definition

### Construction

- A term pertaining to the cross section of a flexural member. The section modulus with respect to either principal
__axis__is the__moment of inertia__with respect to that axis divided by the distance from that axis to the most__remote____point__of the tension or compression__area__of the section, as required. The section modulus is used to determine the flexural stress in a beam.
