  • noun one item of the data accessed by reading through all the data in a list until the correct one is found, as on a tape
  • noun storage whose locations can only be accessed in a serial way: locating one item requires a search through every location
  • noun storage which only allows sequential access

Electronics

  • Storage and/or retrieval of data to or from a computer storage medium in which bits, characters, or data units are transferred sequentially, or one after the other. Such transfers must follow a given order, such as one running from start to finish or from top to bottom. This contrasts with parallel access (1), where multiple bits, characters, or data units are transferred simultaneously. Also called serial storage, or sequential storage.
  • Reading and/or writing of data from or to computer memory in which bits, characters, or data units are transferred sequentially. This contrasts with parallel access (2), where multiple bits, characters, or data units are transferred simultaneously. Also called serial memory, or sequential memory.
