  • A technique formerly used by actors to build up their nervoustension offstage, thereby enabling them to enter a scene in a stateof excitement. Actors waiting for their cue used to shake the ropeladders hanging from the flies to raise their pulse rates and quickentheir breathing. This technique has given way to other devices, suchas breathing exercises.
