  • An alloy that can undergo significant plastic deformation, then be returned to its original shape upon being heated. Used, for instance, in medical devices such as prosthetic limbs or dynamic instruments utilized for minimally invasive surgical procedures, in robotics, in cell phone antennas, and to automatically open and close greenhouse windows. A common example is Nitinol. Its abbreviation is SMA.
