Astronomy

• Type of wave encountered in Earthquakes (and seismic events in other celestial bodies) which are useful in determining interior structures of planets because they are not able to travel through any liquid core which the body may have. Shear waves are propagated by a movement of the particles in which they are travelling at right angles to the direction of propagation, which is only possible in a rigid material.
