Sheila

Definition

Slang

  • noun a woman. This well-known Australianism, although old-fashioned, is still heard. It is an alteration of an earlier word shaler (meaning ‘young woman’), of Gaelic origin, which was used by Irish immigrants. The word became a generic term for females, the feminine counterpart of Paddy, and was altered to coincide with the female Christian name.
