Sheridan Whiteside

  • The central character, a venomous theater critic, in TheMan Who Came to Dinner (1939) by George S. Kaufman andMoss Hart. The play was inspired by a visit from the notoriouslyoutspoken US critic Alexander Woollcott to the house of Hart'sfamily. Woollcott proved an impossible guest; among his many acidcomments during his stay was the observation on Hart's home: "Justwhat God would have done if he had the money". Surprisingly,Woollcott was amused by the piece - he even toured in the rolehimself with great success.
