  • A play by the US actor and playwright William Gillette (1855 - 1937)that opened in 1899 in Buffalo. At its London opening (1905) at theDuke of York's Theatre, the role of the page Billie was played bythe young Charles Chaplin for 50 shillings a week. Gillette, who playedthe title role for nearly 40 years, had obtained Conan Doyle's permissionto present his detective on the stage (and later the radio). Fromthe play's profits, he built Gillette Castle in Hadlyme, Connecticut,an eccentric mansion with its own miniature railway in the grounds.
