  • (Japanese: new school) A modern version of the Japanese kabukidrama that reflects Western influence, even allowing women to appearon stage. Beginning in the 1880s, the movement reached a peak in theearly years of the 20th century and then declined. Attempts have beenmade to revive shimpa in the post-war era, usually with worksthat are rather sentimental.
