single transferable vote

  • noun a proportional voting system where each voter votes for the candidates in order of preference, and this vote is transferred to the next preference candidate if the first choice is not elected. A calculation based on the total votes is made to show how many votes, or what quota, a candidate needs to be elected. Candidates with more than this electoral quota of first preference votes are automatically elected, and their second preference votes are passed to other candidates, and so on until the full number of candidates have the required quota and so are elected.
