smart dust

  • A collection of microelectromechanical machines which incorporate sensors, processing capabilities, a power supply, and the ability to intercommunicate wirelessly with each other so as to form a single computing unit. Each smart dust particle is called a mote (1), and such dust is light enough to remain suspended in the air of a given area or enclosure. Used, for instance, for weather sensing, verification that groups of devices are functioning properly, or for spying.
