- A denial-of-service attack in which a network is inundated with ping packets. In it, a ping request is sent to a broadcast address of a target network, where all nodes receive and immediately respond to said packets. Since each request can be replicated up to 255 times, thousands or millions of such requests per second, along with their responses, can quickly paralyze a network. If IP broadcasting is disabled, such an attack can not be made. Also called smurfing, or smurf.
