  • In medieval France, amateur theatrical societies of 'companiesof fools'. When the Church suppressed the Feast of Foolsin the 15th century the sociétés joyeuses tookover many of its features, thereby creating the first secular dramain France. The local groups, mostly composed of young men, producedtwo kinds of farce, the sotie, in which all the characterswere fools, and the sermons joyeux, which were burlesque sermons.
