- A key, such as that on a computer keyboard or cell phone, that can serve for different functions or purposes, depending on the application running, mode of operation, or the like. A cell phone, for instance, may use a single key to access menu selections and make entries, with the current function indicated by a keyword on its LCD display. Also spelled soft key.
