solar-terrestrial physics

  • Study of the interaction between the Earth and the Sun, with particular emphasis on the effect on the Earth of charged particles and energy from the Sun and of the interactions of solar and terrestrial magnetism. The ionosphere – the zone of charged particles around the Earth – is sustained by solar activity and is of particular importance in solar-terrestrial relations. The whole field of solar-terrestrial physics is being altered by space missions like SOHO and Cluster, designed to amplify greatly our knowledge of the processes by which the Sun influences the Earth.
