  • (French: sound and light) A type of outdoor dramatic spectaclepresented after dark in appropriate natural settings or around historicbuildings. Such entertainments are dependent on lighting effects (suchas coloured floodlights or laser beams), music, and a recorded narrative,often punctuated by dramatic sound effects; there may or may not bea cast of performers involved. The first son et lumièrewas staged in 1952 at the Château de Chambord on the CossonRiver in France. The first British production of this kind was stagedin 1957 at Greenwich Palace; the first US one was in 1962 at IndependenceHall in Philadelphia.
