• In acoustics, a measure of the intensity of a sound relative to a reference intensity. For instance, it may be expressed as ten times the common logarithm of the ratio of a given sound in a specified direction, to a reference sound intensity of 1 picowatt per square meter. Expressed in decibels. Also called sound level (1), or intensity level (1).
