  • noun dawn. A joky euphemism inspired by ‘cock-crow’. The phrase became obsolete in Britain in the 1930s but remained in use in Australia, and was revived in Britain in the late 1960s by the cartoon strip The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, published in the satirical magazine Private Eye.
