speckle interferometry

Definition

Astronomy

  • Process for determining the surface features of stars, which would normally be unresolvable by standard telescopic methods. Instead of lengthy photographic exposures, where details of a star’s surface are blurred by atmospheric turbulence, many very short exposures of bright stars are taken and combined by computer. This can produce images detailed enough to show features and to allow star diameters to be measured.
