  • Europe's earliest purpose-built playhouses, dating from the16th century. They were ornately decorated and had stages equippedwith an array of mechanical devices. The only surviving examples,all in Italy, are Andrea Palladio's Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza (1585),Vincenzo Scamozzi's Court Theatre at Sabbioneta (1589), and GiovanniBattista Aleotti's Teatro Farnese at Parma (1619).
