  • A gigantic theater designed by Steele MacKaye forthe 1893 Chicago World's Fair but never built. MacKaye intended itto seat 12,000; the 25 moving stages would have incorporated the mostadvanced European stage equipment. The first production was to havebeen The World Finder, for which Dvořák composedhis New World Symphony.

    Financial problems prevented the grand design from being realizedand MacKaye died the following year. A scale model had been constructedand demonstrated, however, and theater architects later employed someof its new ideas for the stage.
