spherical aberration

Definitions

Astronomy

  • Distortion caused by the use of spherically-shaped surfaces in mirrors or lenses in optical equipment. Spherical shapes do not bring light to a precise focus, and it is necessary to use a more complex parabaloidal shape to produce precise images.

Electronics

  • In optics, the inability of a lens, mirror, or reflector to produce a perfect correlation between an object and its resulting image, due to the rays from the edges being focused at a location other than those at the center. This results from such objects having a spherical shape, and this form of distortion can be avoided by using a parabolic shape.
