  • A form of multilevel staging introduced by Leopold Jessner(1878 - 1945) during his period as director of the Berlin StateTheatre (1919 - 30). He replaced conventional sets with a numberof different acting levels connected by stairways. This innovationwas also called Jessnertreppe. The many plays he staged inthis way included Shakespeare's Richard III and Wedekind'sDer Marquis von Keith.
