starburst galaxy

General Science

  • Type of galaxy which exhibits bright emissions in infrared and other wavelengths, possibly caused by major episodes of stellar formation. The nearly simultaneous formation of millions of stars may be prompted by pressure waves caused by severe disturbances to the galaxy, perhaps a collision with another galaxy. Very large examples have been dubbed Super Starburst Galaxies and seem to involve quantities of energy comparable to those needed to produce a complete galaxy of stars.
