  • A transformer whose output voltage is lower than its input voltage. A secondary winding of such a transformer has fewer turns than the primary. Such a transformer may have multiple secondary windings. Used, for instance, to decrease the voltage of electricity as it leaves the transmission system and enters the distribution system. The output voltage of a step-up transformer is higher than its input voltage. Also spelled stepdown transformer.
