  • A sensitive electrical or mechanical instrument used to measure strain in loaded members or objects, usually for research or development.


  • An instrument or device which measures and indicates the strain exhibited by a material or body. It may consist, for instance, of a transducer which varies an electrical property, such as resistance or voltage, proportionally to the magnitude of the detected strain. Examples include resistance strain gauges, and load cells. Also spelled strain gage.
