Strand Theatre



  • (1) The former name (until 2005) of the Novello Theatre.

    (2) A former theater, known sometimes as the Royal Strand,that stood in the Strand, London. This opened in 1832 to stage burlesqueand melodrama, reopened a year later as a school for actors, and became atheater again in 1836. In 1850 it was renamed Punch's Playhouse, becomingassociated in 1858 with H. J. Byron's burlesques. In 1905 it closed and wasdemolished to build Aldwych tube station (now itself closed).
