  • lumber 2", 3", or 4" thick and 6" or wider, graded for its strength properties. Such planks are used primarily for joists in residential construction and graded, in descending order, select structural, #1, #2, and #3. The #1 and #2 grades are usually marketed in combination as #2 & Better.
