surge suppressor

  • A component, circuit, or device which reduces, eliminates, or prevents surges, especially those occurring through power or communications lines. A surge suppressor should prevent peak AC voltages from exceeding given thresholds, thus preventing failures or significant damage. An avalanche diode used in this capacity can have reaction times in the picosecond range. Also called surge protector, surge arrester, or surge diverter.
