• The fruit of a shrub, Eugenia uniflora, of the myrtle family which grows in tropical or subtropical areas. The fruit is like a large red, turning to black, cherry with eight clefts starting at the stem end. The red flesh is soft and juicy and may be eaten raw or cooked.
