  • noun loot, booty, stolen goods. In this sense the word originated among itinerants and thieves in the early 19th century. It had earlier denoted goods or possessions when carried. The word is ultimately related, via dialect, to ‘sway’ and ‘swing’. In modern usage swag is usually used humorously.
