switched-mode power supply

Definitions

Electronics

  • A power supply whose input is switched very quickly. This helps reduce losses at higher frequencies, and allows for a more compact design than those whose input is 50 or 60 Hz. The switching devices, however, may produce more noise or interference. Its abbreviation is SMPS.
