- A disk that contains the files necessary to boot a computer. It is usually used when the disk from which the computer ordinarily boots fails. The operating system is included in the contents of a boot disk, and it may be a floppy disk, or an optical disk such as a CD-ROM. Also called startup disk, boot disk, or bootable disk.
