  • (Spanish: invisible theater) In Argentina in the 1970s, a type ofhappening presented in public places to unsuspecting audiencesby the Brazilian playwright and director Augusto Boal (1931 - ).An exile from his own country because of his Marxist views, Boal alsodevised the teatro jornal, a type of Living Newspaper.His first work of protest theater was the drama Revoluçãona América do Sul (Revolution in South America),presented in 1961. Boal's ideas about the revolutionary potentialof the theater are set out in the 1975 volume Teatro do Oprimido(Theatre of the Oppressed).
