- A device or piece of equipment that facilitates telephonic communications for those with reduced hearing and/or speech abilities. Such a device usually has a keyboard for inputting messages, and a display for viewing incoming messages. Its abbreviation is TDD. Also known by an alternate term, Telecommunications Device for the Hearing Impaired, which reflects a bit more empathy for those with special needs. Also called text telephone, or teletypewriter (2).
