Tesla coil

  • An air-core transformer which develops a high voltage at high frequencies. In a typical configuration, the primary coil consists of a few turns of large-diameter wire, while the secondary has many turns of a small-diameter wire. A properly selected capacitor is charged to a voltage of several thousand volts, then discharged through the primary, with the process being repeated hundred of times with the assistance of a spark gap. The secondary inductively absorbs energy from the primary, magnifying the voltage further, to levels of hundreds of thousands or millions of volts. Also called tesla transformer.
