  • A usually slender object or device which is utilized to detect, sample, or measure a phenomenon, by being placed in proximity or in direct contact with an object, material, or area. A probe may consist of an electrode, lead, rod, optic fiber, or the like. Probes can be used to test and quantify any number of phenomena, including voltage, current, resistance, magnetic flux strength, temperature, pressure, electron density in a plasma, logic levels within a logic circuit, and so on. Also, to sample with or otherwise use such a probe. Also called testing probe, or probe (1).
