  • A loose association of four French directors - Louis Jouvet,Gaston Baty (1885 - 1952), Charles Dullin (1885 - 1949), and Georges Pitoëff (1887 - 1939) - established in 1927. The main object was mutual support in the face of hostile criticism and what they saw as the increasing trivialization of the French commercial theater. All four had been successful in creating new directions for the French theater since World War Iand their work had an important influence on later experimental drama. In 1936Baty, Dullin, and Jouvet were appointed associate directors of the Comédie-Française.
