The House of Bernarda Alba



  • A tragedy by García Lorca, written in 1936(the year of his death) and first performed in 1945 in Madrid, thenin New York in 1951. The final part of a trilogy that also includesBlood Wedding (1933) and Yerma (1934), The Houseof Bernarda Alba is widely considered to be the writer's bestwork.

    The play is set in a Spanish village where Bernarda Alba,her insane mother, and her five daughters struggle to cope after thedeath of Bernarda's husband. The oldest daughter, Angustias, receivesa marriage proposal, which causes jealousy among her sisters. Theyoungest, Adela, has an affair with Angustias's fiancé andcommits suicide after her mother pretends to have him murdered.
