  • A play by A. W. Pinero that made his name when itopened in London in 1885. It was the first of three farces by Pinerostaged at the old Royal Court Theatre before its closurein 1887.

    The plot centres upon the friendly but incompetent magistrate,Mr Posket, whose disreputable stepson Cis lures him into a night ofillegal drinking at the Hotel des Princes. A police raid results inthe arrest of everyone except Posket and Cis, who escape. The nextmorning the magistrate has to sentence his drinking companions, includinghis own wife, to seven days in prison. Posket's coat, left behindduring the raid, is subsequently traced to him. Before he too facesa magistrate, he gives Cis £1000 to emigrate to Canada.
