The Marat/Sade



  • The short title of the celebrated verse play by the German-bornwriter Peter Weiss (1916 - 82), first performed in Berlin in 1964.That same year Peter Brook directed an acclaimed productionfor the RSC with Ian Richardson as Marat, Glenda Jackson as CharlotteCorday, and Patrick Magee as de Sade. Brook's savage production isusually considered the epitome of the Theatre of Cruelty.

    The play's full title is The Persecution and Assassinationof Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charentonunder the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. When the critic AlanBrien asked a friend if he had seen the play, he is reported by Briento have replied, "No, but I've read the title".
