The National Health
- A black comedy by Peter Nichols. It was first performedat the National Theatre, London, in 1969, although Nichols had originallywritten it for television. The play, which contrasts hospital soapoperas with the reality of a ward for terminally ill men, was votedbest play of the year by the London theater critics.
The plot involves the love affair between two members of thestaff of a London hospital, Dr Neil Boyd and Nurse Norton, a Caribbean woman.Their story is told with cynicism by Barnet, an orderly whoprepares the bodies of dead patients for the undertaker, and thenin absurdly romanticized form in the television soap Nurse Norton'sAffair.
