  • A comedy by Aristophanes, first performed in 421 BCin Athens as an appeal for an end to the Peloponnesian War betweenAthens and Sparta. The plot concerns a farmer who flies to heavenon a dung-beetle and discovers that Zeus has allowed War to imprisonPeace in a cavern. The play was staged a few weeks before the ratificationof the peace of Nicias and several months after the deaths of thetwo main advocates of the war, the Athenian Cleon, whom Aristophaneshad abused in The Knights (424 BC), and the SpartanBrasidas.
