The Representative

  • A controversial documentary drama (see documentary theater)by the Swiss playwright Rolf Hochhuth. It was first performedin an abridged version in 1963 in Berlin; English-language versionswere seen in London that same year and in New York (as The Deputy)a year later. The lengthy detailed play - which is written in blankverse - caused an outcry by placing much of the blame for the massacreof the Jewish population in Nazi-occupied Europe on Pope Pius XII's refusalto intervene. The play incorporated harrowing film sequences of Auschwitz.Although Hochhuth's virulent attack on the Catholic Church resulted in TheRepresentative being banned in many countries, it effectively launchedthe documentary drama movement and thereby helped to revitalize the Germantheater.
