the Rickety Twins

Definition

Theater

  • Nickname for two London theaters off the Strand that were built back-to-back, the Hicks Theatre (subsequently the Globe; now the Gielgud), which opened in 1868, and the Opera Comique, which opened two years later. They had been jerry-built with the expectation of additional funds that did not materialize.
