Thestory involves the romantic adventures of a band of hot-blooded Englishcavaliers in Naples and Madrid, during the exile of Charles II. Theplay's hero, the dissolute Willmore, is thought to have been basedon either the Earl of Rochester or Behn's lover John Hoyle.
