The Sound of Music

  • Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers. The original 1959 Broadway production featured Mary Martin in the leading role and won a Tony Award. In the 1961 London production at the Palace Theatre Jean Bayless appeared as Maria, while the extraordinarily popular 1965 film version starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. A 1981 revival at the Apollo Victoria Theatre set a record for a single week's attendancefigure (2600 seats overbooked at 101%). In 2006 Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End revival set a new trend by casting its Maria (Connie Fisher) through a TV reality show. The musical is one of the few to feature Nazi characters.

Set in Austria in the 1930s, the story concerns Maria Rainer,a postulant nun, who becomes governess to the seven children of CaptainGeorg Von Trapp, who has recently lost his wife. Maria's high spiritssoon cheer the family, and a hesitant romance with the captain leadsto their marriage. The Nazis gain power, however, and the singingfamily use their appearance at the Salzburg Festival of Music to fleeover the mountains to Switzerland. The songs include 'The Sound ofMusic', 'Climb Every Mountain', 'Maria', 'My Favourite Things', and'Do Re Mi'.

This last, most remunerative and least inspired...ofthe Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborations is square and solid sugar.
