The Student Prince



  • A romantic operetta by the prolific Hungarian-born US composerSigmund Romberg (1887 - 1951). It was first performed in 1924in New York under the full title of The Student Prince of Heidelberg.The plot, which is based on the play Old Heidelberg by WilhelmMeyer-Foerster, concerns the careless life and loves of a prince studyingin Heidelberg, especially his romance with a local barmaid. Two yearslater Romberg followed this hit with another successful operetta,The Desert Song. Although the film version of The StudentPrince (1954) featured the voice of Mario Lanza, he was consideredtoo fat to play the hero on screen (the part was taken by Edmund Purdom).
